eXmerce Exhibits at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Week

This evening we exhibited at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours Tradeshow. It was a great opportunity for our team to educate small business owners about the benefits of bartering and how it can be used as a cost-savings and marketing tool to grow one's business.

We were happy to see some of our members in attendance - Sunny, Romaicia, and Brandon with Seen My Ad and Mahmud with Integrity Force. It was also nice running into Ryan Townend, CEO of William Joseph who was recently awarded by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce with the Rogers Innovation award. Congrats Ryan and his team at WJ.

Overall, it was great event! We thank the many people who dropped by our booth and we look forward to exhibiting at a future Chamber event.

For jaded diners who cannot stand the thought of another steak sandwich, the Marathon, in trendy Kensington, offers spicy and exotic concoctions of Ethiopian cuisine. Served in the traditional Ethiopian manner, the food consists of dozens of exotic pastes served on flat round bread, which does double-duty as both a plate and utensil. The pastes are exciting concoctions of lamb, beef, chicken, lima beans and vegetable mixes. There are full vegetarian combinations available as well. Meals are generally communal affairs, with up to five people eating off of one large round-bread.

A business in the start up phase usually has one major challenge, CASH FLOW! In this regard, eXmerce has made an incredible difference to Creative Impetus and to my personal life as well. I am involved in a number of endeavours, to include a Marketing and Communications company. It was for me, an incredible luxury to meet with Riccio Law, knowing that I could barter legal fees in respect to a number of company formations. That has been the biggest business boon to date for me, along with the printing I have utilized for a number of projects.

It is the personal level where I really have felt the impact of my eXmerce membership. I am a single mother and given the tight budget surrounding the launch of a new company, extras are basically unheard of. In my case, dental was a big issue and definitely something to be put off until "I can afford it". With eXmerce I can afford it... NOW! It has been a huge thing for me as I definitely would have alotted that cash to another "necessity" and eXmerce has allowed me to look after myslef! The same goes for cleaning. Personal cleaning for a home-based start up? Are you kidding? However, having my home clean and my time saved in the process has opened up more time for my son and a better space for me to create my business in.

I have only just got started! I made a list of everything I can use from our barter network and intend to make it to the bottom of the list soon. Cash is king and I am happy for every penny I don't spend!

I have been trading my service business for years...just ask any contractor that was parked in my lot. If I saw a plumbing van or another trade or service I required, it was nothing for me to take a jog out to their vehicle and make a pitch! The beauty of this system is that they can use their trade dollars on any of the hundred members of Exmerce and whether they desire my service or not, there is something they need on the system.

This year I made the move into my own catering business, leaving my tenure as an executive chef. I had a vision for where I wanted to take my business but faced all the usual obstacles a start up business encounters.

One of the biggest drivers for a catering business is word of mouth, and being new to Calgary, this presented a significant challenge. Becoming a member of eXmerce created a quick fix for this issue; jump starting my network by exposing me to over 100 members in eXmerce's barter community. Every event we have catered has lead to others, it is that simple. I have also received cash referrals from barter members! The power of word of mouth stemming from such a large starting point has created a domino effect for my business.

I am really pleased with the organized barter system.And an added boon has been the cash I have saved with Exmerce. I have used printing, cellular, web design and advertising services to date, all of which would have impacted my cash flow nominally. Instead, I have taken it "on trade" and used my cash for things like equipment purchases, overhead and staffing, which has been awesome for my start up state. By the way, the ad I placed in this month's Calgary Living on barter has already led to cash business!

For a very small fee I have been able to accomplish a lot and have definitely received great value!

Headquarters Mgmt Ltd is one of the original members of eXmerce, having joined in the fall of 2004.

The concept of organized barter was foreign to us but the team at eXmerce showed us all of the benefits of using a barter service. Our barter dollars are used for employee incentives such as giving them a percentage of barter sales to use as they see fit, along with feeding them from the many restaurants in the club to giving them certificates for the massage therapist and beauty treatments from the hair salons and esthetics members. We also have made quick work of our barter dollars on home and office renovations, health care, car repairs and maintenance to name just a few.

Did you know? There's 3 ways in posting transactions through eXmerce. You can either call/email your trade broker to help you post transaction or login to your eXmerce account online, click on the "Post Transaction," link on the left hand side, select the buyer, enter the amount including the GST and a short description of the product/service provided and the invoice will be approved by eXmerce within 24 hours. In cases where you are unable to find the buyer from the drop down menu, this means the business is on a standby status. In this case, contact your trade broker and he will be able to post the transaction for you. Remember to always keep in touch with your trade broker before and after any products/services you provide for security purposes! This way your trade broker can tell you if the buyer is pre-authorized for the transaction or not!

I'm sad to say good-bye to our friend Kristen who was our Trade Director in Vancouver and a former member of eXmerce in Calgary. She passed away April 14, 2010. I had the pleasure of first meeting Kristen at a Meetup Group. Kristen later joined eXmerce as a member promoting her Nu-Skin business. With her move back to Vancouver in the summer of 2009, she helped us open a branch office in Vancouver. Kristen was the perfect fit for eXmerce - full of integrity and commitment. I will always remember Kristen as being happy-go-lucky, cheerful and just someone who'd be there for you no matter what. She always exuded confidence, energy and enthusiasim. She was just a real joy to be around.

I'm asking members of eXmerce for a favor - if you had the chance to build a personal relationship with Kristen or even conduct business with her to please send me a note via e-mail (nelsonliem@exmerce.com) so that I can put something together for her parents. I met with the owners at a new Indian restaurant in town yesterday. They were both a pleasure to meet. Some of the things they were looking to purchase on barter included general renovations, window lettering and carpet cleaning. About a month ago or so, I received a call from Adam Jacob, President of www.barteryourway.com who runs a business barter exchange in Louisville, Kentucky. I really liked his enthusiasm and his passion for barter and his company. Business Networking Function and Citytv & Sobeys 13th Annual Fame for Food!!

eXmerce is hosting a Speed Networking and Christmas Party Event at China Rose (228 28th Street SE) on November 25, 2009 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm to connect businesses together and we're inviting everyone to come out to greet each other to learn about the diversed businesses within the eXmerce barter exchange! This event will allow members to get new business leads for the new year, have a chance to win prizes and Christmas presents for everyone! Tickets will be sold at the door for $15. Half the proceeds will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Make-A-Wish Foundation has helped made over 225,000 wishes to children all over world.

We will be having a guest speaker, Adrian Vraciu of the New prespective Business Consulting.
We will also be doing a 50/50 raffle at this event, half of the proceeds will go to Citytv & Sobeys 13th Annual Fame for Food which is being hosted at the Royal Oak Sobey's (125-888) Country Hills Blvd. NW around 11:00am.
